Chalk Fire

The Chalk Fire, which started on the evening of September 27, has now burned 11,189 acres and is 97% contained.

The remainder of the uncontrolled perimeter is in inaccessible terrain where it is unsafe for firefighters to work. The fire area is being flown daily with infrared equipped aircraft to identify any remaining hot spots. Smoke will likely be visible from interior areas of the fire for at least the next several days. Crews are continuing to mop up and repair fire control lines. As conditions warrant, some firefighting crews and equipment are being demobilized to return to their home bases.

Current information regarding statistics, resources and other information about the fire, is available on the internet at www.inciweb.org/incident/1551/ or by calling 805-961-5770 for a recorded message.

Winter Preparations

The Coast Property Owners Association, local officials, hotline and web volunteers are currently meeting to prepare this website for the likely event that winter events will again require a central communications vehicle and community resource database in Big Sur. If you have ideas about how the site can serve you best or are interested in assisting in some way, please contact the webmaster@surfire2008.org.
